Fritz Hofmann (born January 31, 1928 in Vienna ; † May 31, 2018 ) was an Austrian politician (SPÖ). He was best known for being the city councilor for planning at the time of the collapse of the Reichsbrücke in the Viennese provincial government .

Life

Hofmann attended the Federal Trade School for Building Construction in Vienna and joined the community in 1947. He first worked in the town planning department and then as a building inspector in the municipal department 24.

In 1945 Hofmann joined the Socialist Youth . In 1949 he became the district executive of the SPÖ Floridsdorf and in 1962 its chairman. He held this office until 1990. From 1967 to 1976 he was a member of the SPÖ on the Vienna City Council.

In 1969 he was appointed to the city council for planning issues. After the collapse of the Reichsbrücken in 1976, he was initially exposed to great criticism from the media and the opposition. At the time of the collapse, Hofmann was on vacation in Switzerland, so he was unaware of the accident. Only after a few days - Hofmann had already been searched via newspapers and radio - was his license plate recognized in Switzerland and Hofmann immediately flew to Vienna. There he took responsibility for the accident and resigned from his position. When the report of the Reichsbrücken Expert Commission showed that the collapse could not have been foreseen according to the state of the art at the time and therefore practically impossible to prevent, Hofmann was considered rehabilitated. At first he worked from 1978 to 1981 as a club chairman of the SPÖ parliamentary group in the Vienna state parliament and local council.

After the murder of Heinz Nittel , the Vienna City Councilor for Roads, Transport and Energy, Hofmann took over his position in 1981. In 1983 Hofmann was reappointed to the city planning council. He held this office until 1987, when he was elected President of the Vienna State Parliament. In 1991 he resigned from this position and retired.

In 1994 Fritz Hofmann was made a citizen of the City of Vienna . His funeral ceremony took place in the fire hall Simmering , Hannes Androsch gave the funeral speech.
