Harry Kopietz (born December 12, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He has been a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council since 1984 and was President of the Vienna State Parliament from 2008 to May 2018.

education and profession

After his school education, Harry Kopietz completed an apprenticeship as a general mechanic at the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) between 1963 and 1967 . He then worked as a skilled worker at the ÖBB, where he served his military service in 1969. Kopietz was a member of the Vienna fire brigade from 1970 to 2009 and headed the Floridsdorf youth center of the city of Vienna from 1974 to 1979. From 1979 to 1983 he was the organizational manager of the Vienna People's Education Center . Since 1983 Kopietz has worked as a cultural advisor for the SPÖ education in Vienna, since 1994 as the senior secretary and since 1996 as the state party secretary of the SPÖ Vienna. In 2002 he was given the professional title of Professor .

politics

Harry Kopietz joined in 1960 the Red Falcons in, worked from 1963 in the Socialist Youth (SJ) and the Austrian Trade Union Youth (ÖGJ) with and was from 1965 to 1969 Wiener chairman of the railway workers' union youth . As a result, Kopietz became involved in Floridsdorf district politics, was district chairman of the SJ and ÖGJ Floridsdorf between 1977 and 1982, deputy section head of the SPÖ Strebersdorf from 1970 to 1978 and chairman of the SPÖ Stammersdorf from 1979 to 1994 . In addition, Kopietz has been the district education chairman of the SPÖ Floridsdorf since 1978 and a member of the SPÖ's federal party executive since 1997.

Harry Kopietz represented the SPÖ between 1978 and 1994 as a district councilor in the Floridsdorf district council. In 1994 he moved to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council. In the 18th legislative period he is a member of the “Finances, Economic Policy and Wiener Stadtwerke” committee. Kopietz became known in particular through the Danube Island Festival , which he initiated in 1984 and organized until 2008.

On May 25, 2018, Ernst Woller was elected as the successor to Harry Kopietz as President of the Vienna State Parliament.

Harry Kopietz is married to Brigitte Kopietz and has one child.
