Leopold Thaller (born September 8, 1888 in Vienna ; † February 16, 1971 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), member of the Viennese state parliament and member of the municipal council , 2nd state parliament president and city councilor.

Live and act

Thaller grew up in a working class family and learned the profession of typesetter . During his apprenticeship he became involved in politics from 1904 and joined the Association of Young Workers. He was also active as a functionary in the Landstrasse workers' education association. After participating in the First World War, Thaller was elected chairman of the association and chairman of the International Working Group of Social Democratic Youth Organizations in 1919. In addition, Thaller was elected to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council, to which he initially belonged from 1919 to 1934. From 1932 he was also party secretary of the Social Democratic Labor Party.

After the suppression of the Austrian Civil War , Thaller was taken into “protective custody” in February 1934 and imprisoned in the Wöllersdorf detention center. After his release a few months later, Thaller joined the illegal Revolutionary Socialists . He was in the police service from 1939 and was deported to the Dachau concentration camp in 1944 . After the concentration camp was liberated, Thaller joined the re-established SPÖ district organization Landstrasse and was sworn in again as a member of the state parliament on December 13, 1945, to which he belonged until December 11, 1959. Between December 13, 1945 and March 11, 1949 he also held the office of 2nd President of the State Parliament. On March 11, 1949, Thaller moved to the Vienna provincial government and became the official city councilor for housing, settlement and allotment gardening. On June 22, 1951, he moved to the department for construction matters, which he led until September 19, 1959. Thaller belonged to the state governments Körner I and II as well as Jonas I and II . The upswing in social housing construction fell during his term of office, and the Wiener Stadthalle and the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna were built during his tenure .

Thaller was also district chairman of SPÖ-Landstrasse from 1955 to 1960 and was elected President of the Dorotheum's Board of Trustees on July 15, 1958. In 1964 he became vice-president of the International Association of Public Pawnbrokers. In addition, Thaller was Urania's vice-president for many years. In 1970 he retired. After his death in the Neue Wiener Privatklinik, Thaller was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in an honorary grave (group 14C, no. 30).
