Ingrid Smejkal

Ingrid Smejkal (born April 14, 1941 in Vienna ; † July 25, 2017 ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Smejkal was the executive city councilor and deputy mayor as well as deputy governor of Vienna. She was also a member of the Federal Council and the National Council.

education and profession

Smejkal comes from a socialist family and attended elementary and secondary school. She then graduated from vocational school and learned the trade of retail saleswoman. She then worked as a commercial clerk for 13 years and then from 1973 to 1979 district secretary of the SPÖ Vienna- Alsergrund . Between 1979 and 1981 Smejkal worked as the state women's secretary of the SPÖ Vienna, and between 1981 and 1985 as the federal women's secretary of the SPÖ.

politics

Politically, Smejkal was rooted in the SPÖ early on because of her socialist family. She was already a member of the Workers' Gymnastics Club at the age of six , joined the Socialist Youth at the age of 14 and also switched to the SPÖ in 1973 professionally. At the same time, Smejkal was elected to the Alsergrund district council in 1973, where she worked as a district councilor until 1976. Between September 27, 1976 and November 13, 1978, Smejkal represented the Vienna SPÖ in the Federal Council. From November 3, 1978 to October 5, 1981, Smejkal was a member of the Vienna State Parliament and City Council. On October 6, 1981, Smejkal moved to the National Council, to which she was a member until September 6, 1984.

Helmut Zilk finally appointed Smejkal to the Zilk I state government , where she was sworn in on November 10, 1984 as the official city councilor for education, youth and family. Smejkal belonged to the city senate and the state government like Zilk until November 7th, 1994, whereby her department was expanded from 1994 to social issues and in 1991 to women's issues. From December 1987, Smejkal also held the position of 2nd Vice Mayor and 2nd Deputy Governor. During her term of office, MA 57, the women's department of the City of Vienna, was created, and a third women's refuge and the local council disability committee were set up. The introduction of integration classes at Viennese compulsory schools, the founding of the drug advice center Ganslwirt, the creation of a child and youth advocate free of instructions and the establishment of the Viennese debt counseling service also fall within her term of office.

After her retirement as city councilor, Smejkal was again a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna State Parliament from November 7, 1994 to November 29, 1996. During this period, she also held the office of First President of the Vienna State Parliament. Within the party, Smejkal was district party chairman of the SPÖ Vienna-Alsergrund from 1988 to 1996, and from 1988 to 1996 women chairwoman of the SPÖ Vienna.
