Karl Weigl (politician)

Karl Ludwig Weigl (born October 15, 1879 in Vienna ; † March 27, 1982 ibid) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Little is known about Karl Weigl's childhood and youth; He was a woodworker by trade and was involved in the trade and transport workers' union at a young age . In 1907 he was appointed secretary and four years later, in 1911, general secretary. In 1930 he became president of the Vienna Chamber of Labor after the death of Franz Domes .

His political career began in 1919 when Weigl was elected to the Vienna City Council as a member of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) , of which he was a member until 1934. From November 1920, the municipal council also served as the Viennese state parliament. From 1932 to 1934 Weigl also held the office of Third President of the State Parliament.

During the times of Austrofascism and National Socialism , Weigl went into exile , first to Czechoslovakia , later to Sweden and in 1939 to Switzerland , where he saw the end of the Second World War .

After his return to Austria in 1946, Weigl was responsible for rebuilding the Austrian trade union. As in the time of the First Republic , Weigl became secretary of the Chamber of Labor. However, he no longer exercised a political mandate. In 1953 he received the Karl Renner Prize .

Karl Weigl was 102 years old and died on March 27, 1982 in Vienna. He was buried in the urn grove of the Simmering fire hall (Department 1, Ring 3, Group 6, Number 198).
