Wilhelm Stemmer (born August 27, 1909 in Vienna , † October 13, 1984 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SDAP / SPÖ ) and teacher .

life and career

Wilhelm Stemmer was born on August 27, 1909 in Vienna, where he also completed his school education. He graduated from the Federal Teachers' Training Institute in Vienna-Landstrasse and attended the Pedagogical Institute of the City of Vienna before studying philosophy and natural sciences at the University of Vienna . Even before he had completed his studies in 1933 as a doctor of philosophy (Dr. phil.), He was already active as an assistant teacher in 1928. He joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) in 1929 and lost his position as a teacher in 1934 through the Kinderfreunde , to which he belonged as a summer educator and day care center manager in 1929 . After participating in the Second World War from 1940 to 1945 , Stemmer played a decisive role in the development of the Viennese school system from 1945 to 1965.

At the same time he was again active in local politics and was a member of the Vienna City Council and Parliament from 1945 to 1973 . Including from 1949 to 1954 as deputy club chairman and then from 1954 to 1973 as club chairman of the SPÖ parliamentary group in the local council and state parliament. In addition, Wilhelm Stemmer was first President of the Vienna State Parliament from 1965 to 1973 and appeared as the designer of the Free Teachers ' Voice , an organ of the social democratic teachers' association in Austria founded in 1895. From 1957 to 1972 Stemmer was a member of the Viennese board of directors of what is now the Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) and was also a member of the supervisory board of Wiener Städtische Wechselseiten Insurance Company and managing chairman of the Socialist Teachers' Association of Austria for a longer period of time .

Stemmer died on October 13, 1984 at the age of 75 in his hometown of Vienna. On October 29, 1984 he was buried in a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 C, number 41). His wife Irene survived him by 22 years and died in 2006 at the age of 96.

Honors

On April 17, 1998, a municipal council committee for culture renamed a way in the 17th district of Hernals in honor of the Viennese local politician and teacher as Wilhelm-Stemmer-Weg . Other honors that he received throughout his life included the award of the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria , which he took over on December 5, 1960, and the award of the Viktor Adler plaque for special merits in 1969. In addition On November 12, 1968, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the State of Vienna with the star , the highest attainable level of the order, which he accepted on December 19, 1968.
