history

In 1824 Georg von Högelmüller founded the "Mutual kk priv. Fire Damage Insurance Institution ". 364 personalities, including princes, counts, barons and industrialists as well as church institutions such as monasteries and monasteries, were involved in the establishment. At the instigation of the mathematics professor Josef Salomon, the first life insurance company in Austria, the “General Mutual Capital and Pension Insurance Institution”, started operating in Vienna. This company was later renamed "Janus Mutual Life Insurance Institution".

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I , the Vienna City Council decided in 1898 to found the “Municipal Emperor Franz Joseph Jubilee Life and Pension Insurance Institution”. This company name was changed in 1919 to "Gemeinde Wien-Städtische Versicherungsanstalt". The short form Wiener Städtische has been used since then. Business operations were expanded to include the non-life area.

Ten years later, in 1929, Wiener Städtische took over a block of shares from "Union Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft". This gave her the opportunity to take out transport, hail and livestock insurance. In 1934 Wiener Städtische acquired the share certificates issued by the "Wechselseiten Krankenversicherungsanstalt" and took over the administration of this company. In 1947 the company name was changed to “Wiener Städtische Wechselseiten Versicherungsanstalt”.

On June 14, 1955, today's company headquarters was opened at Schottenring on Vienna's Ringstrasse . The Ringturm was the first high-rise office building in Vienna. In 1971 Wiener Städtische took over the majority of shares in "Donau Allgemeine Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft".

In 1990 Wiener Städtische undertook its first activity abroad as part of the entry into the insurance market of what was then Czechoslovakia by participating in the start-up of Kooperativa. In 1994, preference shares were issued on the Vienna Stock Exchange .

In 2006 the umbrella brand “Vienna Insurance Group” was introduced, followed two years later by the conclusion of a mutual distribution agreement with Erste Group Bank AG and the acquisition of s Versicherung.

On August 3, 2010, the operative insurance business was separated from the group’s international activities into the listed group holding VIENNA INSURANCE GROUP AG Wiener Versicherung Gruppe and the group’s largest individual company in Austria, WIENER STÄDTISCHE Versicherung AG Vienna Insurance Group.

Wiener Städtische Versicherung celebrated its 190th anniversary on December 24, 2014. It is present throughout Austria with nine regional offices and 140 branches and has a market share of around 13.7 percent.

On October 1, 2018, Wiener Städtische Versicherung merged with s Versicherung, which will be retained as a bank distribution brand.
