Hilmar Kabas (born January 6, 1942 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian politician and former leading party functionary of the FPÖ . From November 29, 2006 to June 30, 2007 he worked as an ombudsman .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1960, Kabas studied law at the University of Vienna .

His career in the FPÖ began as Viennese chairman of the Ring Freedom Youth (RFJ) (1961 to 1968). In 1975 he became district party chairman of the FPÖ Vienna Inner City. In 1977 he moved into the state party executive and became finance officer of the FPÖ Vienna. From 1981 to 1998 he was deputy state party chairman, from 1998 to 2004 he was also state party chairman himself. Since 1996 he has been a member of the Vienna State Parliament.

From 1983 to 1986 Kabas was a member of the National Council and from 1990 to 1996 a Vienna City Councilor. Other functions of Hilmar Kabas: Member of the supervisory board of Creditanstalt-Bankverein (CA) from 1980 to 1983, member of the ORF board of trustees from 1993 to 1996.

While Kabas used to be seen as liberal, as the FPÖ leader in Vienna he was noticed by xenophobic election campaigns. In the course of the formation of the FPÖ - ÖVP government in February 2000, Kabas was originally intended to be Minister of Defense. Federal President Thomas Klestil but refused him because of previous xenophobic election campaign of the Vienna FPÖ the swearing .

Kabas also repeatedly arouses media attention with its sometimes remarkably clumsy behavior. Be it in the " hump-dump affair " of May 7, 2000, in which he first referred to Federal President Klestil as a "rascal" , then denied it and claimed that he could no longer remember exactly, but that he had something like that "Hump or Dump" said. After the BZÖ split off in April 2005, Hilmar Kabas took over from April 5 to 23, 2005, as the longest-serving member of the FPÖ party executive, the interim senior team. In this function, he excluded the former FPÖ party chairman Jörg Haider from the party, among others . Hilmar Kabas was editor of the Austrian weekly newspaper " Zur Zeit " together with Andreas Mölzer .

He is currently named as "Honorary Chairman of the FPÖ".
