Marissa Coleman (born January 4, 1987 in Portland , Oregon , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She has been playing for the Indiana Fever in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) since 2014 and for the Turkish team Mersin BSB in the 2016/17 season .
Career
College (2005 to 2009)
Coleman studied at the University of Maryland from 2005 to 2009 . While in college, Coleman also played for the university's athletics department with the Maryland Terrapins. In her freshman season, she reached the final of the NCAA Division I basketball championship final with the Terrapins , where they met the basketball team from Duke University . Since it was a draw after regular time, the game went into overtime, where Coleman scored four out of eight points, two of them 13 seconds from the free throw line. She also got the decisive rebound in the last few seconds and thus secured the Terrapins their first NCAA Division I basketball championship . Coleman ended her first season with an average of 13.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. For this good performance she received several awards such as the ACC Rookie of the Year Award . In her sophomore season she achieved an average of 13.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Although she received some awards again this season, this time there was no team success. In the summer of 2007 she won the gold medal with the United States national team at the Pan-American Games in Brazil . She led the team with 12.6 points per game. Coleman finished her junior season with an average of 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. This season they lost the regional championship against Stanford University and thus missed the entry into the Final Four for the second time in a row. She finished her senior season with an average of 17.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Also in their last season, Coleman was eliminated with the Terrapins in the final of the regional championship. This time the Cardinals , the University of Louisville team , were a size too big.
WNBA (since 2009)
Because of her outstanding performance for the Terrapins , she was selected in the WNBA Draft 2009 by the Washington Mystics in the overall second place. In the first season she played 28 games, but was never part of the starting line-up of the Mystics. She was elected to the WNBA All-Rookie Team after her premiere season. In 2009 she scored 6.1 points per game in an average of just under 20 minutes. In 2010 Coleman played every game of the season, was also in the starting five for the first time and was able to increase both her points and her playing time. In the 2011 season she played all season games again and was in the starting line-up 28 times. In 2011, too, it was able to further improve its statistical values. For the 2012 season she moved to the Los Angeles Sparks team . In the two years in Los Angeles, she was used almost exclusively as a supplementary player. From the 2014 game series , she was active for the Indiana Fever team. There she played almost all games and was mostly in the starting lineup. Due to the larger game shares, she was also able to increase her statistical values again.
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Marissa Coleman plays like many WNBA players in Europe. She was on the field for teams from Italy, Hungary, Spain, France and France. Most recently she played for the Turkish team of Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyespor in the 2016/17 season .
National team
Although Coleman played successfully with US junior national teams, she was not used in any major tournament for the United States women's national basketball team. With the US team she won the U18 American Basketball Championships in 2004 and the U19 World Basketball Championships in 2005 .
