The Danube Island Festival on the Danube Island in Vienna is an open-air music festival that is organized by the SPÖ Vienna and has been held annually on a weekend since 1984 towards the end of June (until 1990: end of May). With - according to unconfirmed information from the organizer - a total of almost three million visits over three days, it would be the largest music festival with free admission worldwide. The high funding for the festival is criticized.

The event was initiated by city politician Harry Kopietz . The precursor was a “cultural spring festival ” in 1983, which took place in the completed area around the Floridsdorfer Bridge on the Danube Island, which was then in its final stages. The appearances by Minisex , Tom Pettings Hertzattacken and Heli Deinboek had attracted 160,000 fans instead of the expected 15,000.

At the big festival stage (2011)

Over the years, the “experimental balloon” became a three-day event on a festival site that stretches over 4.5 kilometers from the Reichsbrücke to the Nordbrücke . Musicians from a wide variety of musical genres and German-speaking representatives of the cabaret perform on around 27 stages spread across the area . There are also numerous performance shows, snack bars, sales and information stands. One of the highlights was the fireworks , which took place on Saturdays and lasted more than 20 minutes. The fireworks have been dispensed with since 2008 because they distracted too much from the numerous stage performances. In terms of safety, this is also an advantage, as the load peaks on the journey home of the visitors could be smoothed out somewhat. For 2009, a separate fireworks festival was planned on the Danube Island at a different date, but this was rejected again. The 25th Danube Island Festival did not take place until the beginning of September because of the European Football Championship held in Vienna in June 2008 . Since 2009 the festival has been taking place as usual at the end of June. Harry Kopietz, who organized the Danube Island Festival until 2008, then handed the main responsibility to Christian Deutsch , who also succeeded Kopietz in the role of SPÖ state party secretary. From 2005 to 2012 Sascha Kostelecky was responsible for the project management of the festival. In November 2012 it was announced that the project management had been transferred to Thomas Waldner.

For 2019, the state party secretary of the organizer SPÖ-Vienna, Barbara Novak, announced under the festival motto “Together we are Vienna” that women should be given more weight on the stages and as visitors. The hashtag # dif19 traveled as a 2 m high, red sculpture as an advertising photo motif through Vienna and the eastern region. A competition for the participation of musicians was held in February and March, and an opening party was held in early June. Despite Corpus Christi the day before, the island festival took place as usual from June 21 to 23 on the weekend before school closed.

The Danube Island Festival 2020 was originally supposed to be postponed to September due to the coronavirus pandemic . In June it was announced that it would take place in a completely different form (240 pop-up concerts from July 1st to September 20th).

Numbers and dates

For a long time, the organizer has reported more than half a million visits per day - in 2007, for example, a total of 2.6 million visits, in 2013 3.2 million visits. This would make the Danube Island Festival the largest open-air festival in Europe. According to the organizer, an average of around 250,000 visitors are on the island at the same time.

In 2008, according to the organizers, around 40 million euros were raised on a budget of 5.5 million euros, from which restaurants and hotels in particular benefit. The average turnover of around 150 stands was around 50,000 euros, the stand rent was 400 euros per running meter.

In order to reduce the pollution of the site, only deposit cups are officially issued, which can be taken back at collection points by midnight. In 2007 there were house rules for the first time , which prohibit the taking of spirits and glass bottles and provide for random checks. In addition to a police force, around 1,400 volunteers ensure safety and smooth processes . In 2011 a new security concept was established which includes more security zones and video surveillance of entrances and exits.

According to unconfirmed information from the organizer, the Danube Island Festival had 2.8 million visitors in 2017. The event recorded 52,211 media reports in national and international media and the total advertising value is 130 million euros.

In 2018, the number of visitors fell to 2.4 million visits in cool weather, according to unconfirmed information from the organizer.

In 2019 the weather was partly hot and sunny again, but also with clouds and light rain. The organizer stated about 2.7 million visits.

Concerts (selection)

In 1992 Udo Jürgens played in front of 220,000 spectators, in 1993 one of the great highlights was the Falco concert (see LIVE Donauinsel ) with more than 150,000 fans. A heavy thunderstorm led to partial flooding of the stage and ultimately to failure of the equipment. Before that, the power went out briefly during the night flight due to a lightning strike. In 1995 The Kelly Family performed in front of 250,000 visitors, in 2006 Christina Stürmer sang on the Ö3 stage in front of around 180,000 spectators. On June 23, 2007, Rainhard Fendrich performed “instead of and for” Georg Danzer , who had died two days earlier, in front of around 200,000 visitors.

Special / Note: At the beginning of November 2019, No. 37 was first announced for June 26th to 28th. Due to the foreseeable necessary spatial distancing in the course of the coronavirus pandemic , the postponement to September 18-20 was announced on March 30, 2020. On June 3, 2020 it was announced that it will take place in a completely different form. A double-decker bus will tour Vienna from July 1st to September 20th; 240 pop-up concerts of 20 to 25 minutes are planned. criticism

The Court of Auditors criticized in an article published in the April 2019 report that municipal funds were also used for party advertising. The eligibility of the organizer associations behind it was also insufficiently checked or assessed, and the documents submitted were often not checked. In addition, some stewards and helpers of these associations were not registered with the health insurance , the resulting penalty was paid with funds contrary to the dedication.

There was also a lack of understanding about the amount of funding of almost 1.5 million euros for the festival, which was funded by the SPÖ-related association Wiener Kulturservice (a co-organizer of the Danube Island Festival) for 2019.
