Manitas de Plata (1968)

Manitas de Plata (born  August 7, 1921 in Sète , † November 6, 2014 in Montpellier ; actually Ricardo Baliardo ) was a French guitarist who became world famous for his virtuoso guitar playing in the late 1950s. The Spanish artist name means "silver hand", an appreciation of his guitar art. He came from a family of Gitans, French Roma .

Together with his cousin José Reyes , a flamenco singer from Nice , he gave numerous concerts worldwide. At many of his concerts he was accompanied by his sons, nephews and sons-in-law (Los Baliardos) , with whom he shaped his own flamenco style , mostly based on the rhythm of the rumba . He became a forerunner and role model for many musicians and groups, such as B. the Gipsy Kings . Manitas de Plata was discovered in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer , in the Camargue in southern France . Lucien Clergue , Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí are among his discoverers and patrons .

Like many of the Camargue musicians, Manitas de Plata also settled down and last lived in an apartment in La Grande Motte in the south of France . He died on November 6, 2014 at the age of 93 in a hospital in Montpellier.
