Gipsy Kings (German "Gypsy Kings") is a French , Spanish-born flamenco - pop - music group .
Band history
The story of the Gipsy Kings began in 1975 when the sons of the flamenco singer José Reyes - Nicolas, Paul, Canut, Patchaï and André - and his son-in-law Chico Bouchikhi got together to accompany him. Initially, the combo was called José Reyes et Los Reyes and toggled back and forth between weddings, festivals and street performances. At a wedding they agreed on a collaboration with the three Baliardo brothers Diego, Paco and Tonino (relatives of the guitarist Manitas de Plata). They later changed their band name to "Gipsy Kings". But the big breakthrough did not happen at first; the first two albums attracted little attention. At this point in time the Gipsies were still playing their traditional, energetic flamenco rhythms , driven by Tonino's guitar work and Nicolas' voice. With the producer Claude Martinez, the Gipsy Kings enriched themselves with influences from the Middle East, Latin America and North Africa. The band released Djobi, djoba and Bamboleo in 1987 on an independent label .
After that, the Gipsy Kings exceeded all expectations: at the end of the 1980s, the eight French stormed the beach cafes, bars and open-air discos around the Mediterranean with summer hits such as the aforementioned Djobi, djoba and Bamboleo . The songs brought back to their home countries by Central European tourists started their march of conquest in the sales charts of other countries within a very short time. In 1989/90 alone, the group received gold and platinum awards in 15 countries. Her debut album went 500,000 times over German shop counters.
The group today consists mainly of five brothers from the Reyes family and three brothers from the Baliardo family; they are descendants of Kale - Roma -Flüchtlingen, during the Spanish Civil War emigrated to France.
At the beginning the band consisted exclusively of guitarists , but with increasing success they added synthesizers , electric bass and percussion instruments . In the meantime the group went back to their roots and released an album called Roots , on which only guitars were used again.
For their album Savor Flamenco , the Gipsy Kings won the Grammy Awards 2014 for the best world music album of the year.
