Chicago "Chi" Coltrane [ ʃɪˈkɑːgoʊ ʃaɪ kɔlˈtreɪn ] (born November 16, 1948 in Racine , Wisconsin ) is an American rock musician , singer , pianist and songwriter .

Life

Chi Coltrane became interested in music from an early age. At twelve, she had already mastered eight instruments, but then decided to play the piano . In her parents' house only jazz and classical music played . In an interview she named Henry Mancini , Tschaikowski and Johann Strauss as her sources of inspiration.

As a teenager she started playing in clubs in Chicago and soon gained some notoriety. In 1971 she represented the USA at the International Rock Festival in Rio de Janeiro . She moved to Los Angeles , where Curtis Mayfield invited her to be a guest on his show. As a result, she was offered a recording contract.

The first album called Chi Coltrane came out in 1972. The resulting single Thunder and Lightning reached the American Top 20. It was their only hit in the USA, which is why it is still traded there as a one-hit wonder to this day . In Europe, Coltrane was successful with Go Like Elijah . This song reached number one in the Dutch charts.

In 1973 the second album Let It Ride was released with their only hit in the German charts, Who Ever Told You . The critics described her as the "Queen of Rock" and successor to Janis Joplin . Numerous appearances in well-known television shows followed. The excessive touring took its toll, however, whereupon she withdrew from the stage for some time and concentrated on songwriting.

In 1977 the third album Road to Tomorrow came out. The following year she toured Germany with the German group Lake . The press hailed her as “the beautiful woman with the hard attack”.

The next albums were Silk and Steel (1981, with the hits Blinded by Love and Leaving It All Behind ) and Ready to Roll (1982, with On My Own , Soulstalker , Here Comes the Rain and Clouds, Dreams and Love ). Also in 1982 Chi produced her first live album Live .

In 1986 the CD The Message followed with songs like Goodbye My Love , I Didn't Want to Fall in Love and The Message , which received little attention. For this reason, Teldec Germany let the contract with her expire. No other record company in Europe and the USA showed any interest in Coltrane. In 1990 she recorded the title Shot to Despair for the CD El Dorado in support of the tropical rainforests . In 1991 she wrote the music for an edition of the German television series Tatort , which she recorded together with Tangerine Dream .

Chi Coltrane lived in Zurich for two years before returning to the States in 1993. She built a recording studio in Los Angeles. She was involved in a number of aid projects. In 1996 the compilation Chi Coltrane's Golden Classics was released .

In 2009 she made a comeback at the Donauinselfest in Vienna, where she appeared again in front of a large audience after a long time. The then released live CD The Comeback Concert - Live in Vienna sold well. Since then she has been touring Europe regularly.
