Rauhnacht is an Austrian music group that can be assigned to cross-over folk music . The name is derived from the mystical raucous nights around the turn of the year.

history

Beginnings

In 1990, Franz Thalhammer from Altaussee experimented for the first time with a musical mixture of drum computers and classic folk instruments such as dulcimer and guitar. From this some songs emerged within a short time. In order to be able to present these to an audience, a band was put together at the end of the year, which from then on played their first concerts under the name "Rauhnacht". The following year a first demo was recorded, which was released in 1992 as an EP on Spray Records under the title Ålpera .

National awareness

After numerous concerts in the Salzkammergut , the first national appearances followed, including at the Vienna Danube Island Festival . The band's unconventional mix of styles soon aroused the interest of larger record companies and so in 1996 the first album was recorded in person in the recording studio of the then Falco producer Robert Ponger and released by Ariola . This was followed by other appearances in Austria and neighboring Bavaria, for example at the Tollwood Festival in Munich . In 1999 the album Da Teulf schloft nit was also released by BMG Ariola.

Reshuffle and realignment

In the early 2000s, a creative break of two years was taken. During this time there was a musical realignment. There was a reshuffle within the band. Through the increased use of percussion, the music spectrum expanded towards world music . The album Geist was released by BMG Ariola in 2003 and fell short of sales expectations. Thereupon another break was taken. The band members also pursued their own projects during this time.

Restart

In 2007 the band restarted. Having grown to a quintet, the CD SEX was self-published. Two years later, the live album It takes neama lång (Rough Trade) followed, which was well received by critics and audiences alike. A successful concert tour to China (Beijing and Shanghai) in 2012 caused an international stir. In 2015 the album Intan Mond was released , some of which were often played on Austrian regional radio stations such as Radio Oberösterreich or Radio Wien . The double concerts in Gößl am Grundlsee on January 3rd and 4th (at the time of the Raunächte) now have cult status among fans .

style

The music of the group Rauhnacht can be described as pop music with strong influences from blues , rock , African rhythms and the folk music of the Salzkammergut . The texts are mostly written in the Aussee dialect.
