Largest lake in Styria , drinking water quality |
The Grundlsee is an alpine lake in the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut near Bad Aussee . It is located at the southern end of the Dead Mountains . To the east are the Toplitzsee and the Kammersee . With an area of 4.22 km² it is the largest lake in Styria. The municipality of Grundlsee is named with the same name as the lake .
geography
At Gößl the Toplitzbach flows into the lake, which then flows from the outflow at the western end as Grundlseer Traun , one of the source rivers of the Traun , towards Bad Aussee . Other larger streams that feed the Grundlsee are the Zimitzbach (mouth near Gasthof Ladner) and the Stimitz , which flows into the Grundlsee approx. 80 m south of the Toplitz.
The lake is surrounded by the mountains of the Dead Mountains, the south of starting the following means: Ressen , Zlaimkogel , Schober meadow , Hundskogel , brick , Häusl Kogel , Reichenstein , Siniweler , Gössler wall , Lawinenstein and Grasberg .
geology
The lake basin of the Grundlsee is located along a west-south-west / east-north-east trending geological fault . This line, known as the Toplitzsee Fault, runs over the Toplitz and Kammersee lakes into the Dead Mountains. The Ice Age glaciers, which flowed from the high plateau of the Dead Mountains into the Aussee Basin, also followed this fault-related weak zone and expanded the valley and carved out the tongue basin of the Grundlsee. At its western end, the mighty Grundlsee glacier left behind a terminal moraine wall several tens of meters high that dammed the lake.
Limnology
The water temperature in summer fluctuates between 18 ° C and 25 ° C in very sunny summer months. At the Grundlsee and on all other lakes in the inner Salzkammergut there is a ban on internal combustion engines on ships and boats. The only exceptions are professional fishing and regular and occasional shipping. In winter the lake freezes over regularly ( dimictic lake ).
Fish stock: pike , brown trout , lake trout , arctic char , aitel , eel rod , perch , minnows and various white fish. Freshwater polyps and bog animals are also part of the fauna .
Economy and tourism
On the lake from the end of April to the end of October there is a scheduled and excursion boat trip with three motor ships (Rudolf, Traun and Gössl) as well as with barges, which are locally known as "Platten". There are also three rental stations for electric boats and a provider of occasional shipping with a barge that can accommodate around 15 people. The Grundlsee is also a popular lake for sailors and surfers due to the frequent thermal winds. The lake is home to a yacht club, a surf club and a rowing club.
In both Grundlsee and Toplitzsee there are supposed to be finds from the time of National Socialism. Visibility is of interest to divers due to the clear water.
