particularities

Mountain lake, former group of lakes with 3 lakes

The Hirzkarseelein is a small mountain lake in the high plateau of the Dachstein massif in the municipality of Obertraun , Upper Austria . In the 1960s there was still a small group of lakes with three lakes, Vorderer Hirzkarsee, Mittlerer Hirzkarsee and Hinterer Hirzkarsee , the latter is today's Hirzkarsee, the other two have silted up. There are other partially silted paints in the area.

Location and conservation

The Hirzkarseelein is located south of the Hohe Krippenstein not far from the dilapidated Hirzkaralm . Here one of the high valleys of the Dachstein plateau stretches from the Gjaidalm southeast. Between Hirzkarkogel  ( 1859  m above sea level ) in the southwest and Margschierf  ( 2080  m above sea level ) in the northeast, the Hirzkarsee lies at 1814  m above sea level. A. It is a small high mountain varnish with a diameter of around 25 meters and an area of around 550 m², which is surrounded by a fen zone.

About 70 meters to the west, on the way to the lake, lies another wetland, the silted-up Middle Hirzkarsee  ( 1813  m above sea level   ). 140 meters southwest slightly against the Alm out right on the trail in a trough, is the also dry fallen Front Hirzkarsee  ( 1810  m above sea level. A. ). Another small lake, sometimes referred to as Hirzkarsee in older literature , was located in a sinkhole about 500 m to the east, this has largely fallen dry for a long time (today 1846  m above sea level ). North above the road is yet another nameless paints, formerly probably also larger (now 1,835  m above sea level. A. ). Therefore the formerly “rear” lake is only called Hirzkarsee (lein) ; the term -seelein is customary in the area, and denotes small lakes as well as groups of them. The disappearance of numerous Dachstein lakes due to over-management and the increasing karstification of the high plateau has been documented since the 1950s.

The lake is located in the Dachstein European Protected Area ( FFH / BSGAT3101000 / EU02 ) and in the Dachstein nature reserve in the communities of Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun  ( N098 ), and is part of the Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site ( WHS 806 ). The Dachstein is also a water reserve . Around the lake there are rare plants such as marsh marigold and the carnivorous sundew .

Development

Although it is in the high mountains, the lake can be easily reached on foot. In the vicinity of the lake there is a cable car, the Krippensteinbahn (mountain station at the Gjaidalm 2 km west), the lake can be reached from the Gjaidalm - Heilbronner Kreuz path to the left shortly after the dilapidated Hirzkaralm. From the lake head northeast to the Dachstein view , and to the Krippensteinish cave and the Däumelsee .

The lake has drinking water quality and invites you to swim in summer, it is advisable to pay attention to the protected items.
