The Große Ödsee is a forest-lined mountain lake in the Salzkammergut (municipality of Grünau im Almtal , Upper Austria ).

Geography and hydrology

The Great Ödsee lies in the Hetzau, a side valley of the Almtal . To the south of it are the Hochkogel, Großer Priel and Schermberg peaks belonging to the Dead Mountains . The lake can be reached from the Almtal (6 km long road to the Almtalerhaus , which can be used from early summer until the beginning of the hunting season in mid-September) , just like the Kleiner Ödsee, which is around 150 m to the south . Both lakes are easily accessible on hiking trails. Both are popular as bathing lakes in warm summers.

The Great Ödsee is around 8 hectares in size and up to 22 m deep and is surrounded by steeply sloping, densely wooded limestone and moraine banks . In some places there are also gravel and sand banks. The lake has two deep basins in the south with a depth of over 20 m and, separated by a shallower part with a depth of only 3.5 m, in the northern part two basins up to 7 m deep.

The lake is fed by three small source streams, but primarily underground. The drainage also takes place underground to the Straneggbach. The retention time of the water is 174 days. Like the small Ödsee, the Great Ödsee has significant level fluctuations over 1 m. The water level normally rises in winter and falls in summer, especially because the surrounding moraine material does not allow inflows during drought and at the same time withdraws water from the lake.

Emergence

The Ödseen lie in the area of ​​the moraines of the Würm glacial period , which go back to the glacier that pulled down from the Prielgruppe into the Hetzau. Moraine remains can be found above the lakes. In the Hetzau there were once lakes in five places, the largest of which probably had an area of ​​over 1 km². While the other lakes silted up , the two Ödseen were preserved because they are protected by moraines from being buried by the Straneggbach.

ecology

The Great Ödsee is largely unpolluted due to its location. It has a great depth of view in summer and is classified as oligotrophic . The main species of fish include brown trout , brook trout and arctic char . The Great Ödsee is also designated as a nature reserve ( N012 , 8.0943 ha).
