The small Elmsee is located in the Dead Mountains on the Styrian side of the Salzkammergut in Austria . The closest place is Gößl am Grundlsee . The Elmsee is located at the foot of the Elm at around 1621  m above sea level. A. The Elmsee is a (superficial) drainless trough lake and, like the Dreibrüdersee, presumably drains underground into the Lahngangseen and from there again underground via Vorderbach and Hinterbach into the Toplitzsee .

The shore in the northwest is stony with boulders, otherwise the lake has a wide area of the shore with sand or mineral mud. The bank slopes rather flat, at the edge the hair-leaved water cockfoot grows very often here. Subsequently, at a depth of about 50 cm, an area-wide belt consisting of specular pondweed and long-leaved pondweed .

To the east of it is the Pühringerhütte , a refuge of the ÖAV . The Elmsee belongs to the Austrian Federal Forests and is currently privately leased.
