The Steirersee is a Karsee on the Tauplitzalm in the Dead Mountains in Styria , Austria . The lake is at an altitude of 1445 m above sea level. A. embedded in a hollow south below the Sturzhahns ( 2028 m ) and northwest of the Mitterberg ( 1711 m ). With a water surface of 12.5 hectares, it is the largest lake on the Tauplitz high plateau . The 30 meter deep lake is fed by underground tributaries that come from the mountains on the north side. The lake has a length of about 700 meters in a west-east direction with a maximum width of about 200 meters.
The north bank is steep and stony. The east, south and west banks are flatter and gravelly sandy. There are two small islands on the east bank. On the shallow banks, stocks of chandelier algae grow up to a depth of several meters , in between locally dense, but mostly loose stocks of alpine pondweed , Berchtold's dwarf pondweed and hair-leaved water cockfoot .
From the end of the Tauplitzalm Alpenstraße ( 1621 m ) the lake can be reached in 1 hour's walk (path no.218).
