The Hintersee is located in Faistenau , the highest municipality in the Flachgau in the Salzburger Land in Austria . It is located in the Osterhorn group of the Salzkammergut mountains .
The 1.4 km long and up to 700 m wide lake is embedded in a quiet forest landscape, the valley basin in the direction of the Hintersee community , and belongs to the Austrian Federal Forests . The tributary is the Hinterseer Taugl , the outflow of the Almbach , which then flows into the Salzach in Hallein .
It is used as a bathing lake (the Felsenbad natural bathing area is a little below ). The lake and its surroundings are a protected landscape area ( LSG00007 , 342.9531 ha, Seenschutzverordnung 2003).
The lake is also known as reservoir of storage power station group Wiestal -Strubklamm ( Wiestalstausee , storage Strubklamm , Strüblweiher , Hintersee) of Salzburg AG used.
