The Augstsee is a mountain lake on the Loser in Ausseerland in Styria , Austria .
It is 1643 m above sea level. A. Höhe, about 1 km from the mountain restaurant. Its size is about 300 x 125 m and it is around 10 m deep. It is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests . In the north, the lake is dominated by the striking rock pyramid of the Atterkogel .
The lake is covered by a layer of ice about 5 months a year. The only plants that have settled are hose plants and candelabrum algae . The lake is a fishing water in which gudgeons and loaches live.
In midsummer the water can heat up to over 20 ° C and the lake can be used for swimming. It is also suitable for diving.
It is located in the European protected area Totes Gebirge with Altausseer See ( FFH / BSG , AT2243000 / No. 35 ) and the nature reserve Totes Gebirge West ( NSa 16 ).
In 2008 the lake was chosen as the backdrop for the film The Last Knight Templar (released 2011) with Nicolas Cage.
