The Wiestal in the northern part of the state of Salzburg is a small, north-eastern side valley of the Salzach Valley in the Hallein district . It is considered a sports and recreational area, and several hydropower plants are economically important . A narrow section of the valley, the Wiestalklamm , is protected as a natural monument.

geography

The entire valley of the Almbach is often referred to as Wiestal, but it is commonly understood to mean the 10 km long, north-north-east-south-south-west running, central part of the creek, which lies north in the municipality of Ebenau and, for the most part, with its west side in Puch near Hallein and its east side is located in Adnet ; the border between the two communities follows the valley floor. In the lower reaches of the Almbach, the municipality of Adnet south of Puch is opposite the municipality of Oberalm , but this is already outside the Wiestal in a basin. The upper part of the Almbach valley, leading in an arch to the Hintersee, is in the Faistenau community .

The Almbach, officially known as the Oberalm , drains the Hintersee to the north and then flows in a westerly direction through the Strubklamm with the Strubklamm reservoir. As a result, coming from the east, it enters a valley running transversely to it - the actual Wiestal - which continues north for around 3 kilometers to the town of Ebenau and is traversed by the Schwarzaubach up to here . After it has taken up this, the Almbach continues to flow in a southerly direction and is dammed into the Wiestal reservoir, then forms a narrow valley, the Wiestalklamm, and is then dammed again to form the Wiestal compensation basin. After leaving the Wiestal and flowing through a basin area near Adnet, the Almbach finally flows into the Salzach near Hallein .

The valley course from Ebenau to north of Adnet with Schwarzaubach and Almbach lies in the western area of the Osterhorn group and resembles a breakthrough valley .

Wiestalklamm

The Wiestalklamm, also known as the Almbachklamm , is the 1.6 km long narrow valley of the Almbach between the Wiestal reservoir and the Wiestal compensation basin. It is considered a section of particular scenic beauty and is one of the few gorges in the dolomite rock of the Alps. The valley section is s-shaped and is partially bordered by almost vertical rock walls. Primarily for aesthetic reasons, the gorge has been under protection with an area of 12.6 hectares as a natural monument 00126 Wiestal gorge since 1974 .

Economy, culture and leisure

The Wiestal is densely forested, most of the forest is used for agriculture. The Wiestal reservoir and the Wiestal compensation basin are used by power plants operated by Salzburg AG to generate electricity. To the north of the Wiestal reservoir there is a third hydroelectric power plant, the Strubklamm power plant, which is a listed building .

The Wiestal is a local recreation area with strict building regulations that only grant local residents a building permit. In the valley, the rural tradition of setting up maypoles and lighting midsummer fires has been preserved, and there are some very old rural properties.

The Wiestalstausee is used as a bathing lake and fishing area; motor, electric and sailing boats are not allowed. The gorge below the Wiestal reservoir is a popular gorge for canyoning tours. Because of the reservoir, the risk of flash floods is lower than in other gorges.

traffic

The only public road in the Wiestal is the Wiestal state road L107 , which runs from the Hallein urban area to around 4 kilometers north of Ebenau, where it joins the Wolfgangsee road B158. The road is closed to heavy traffic.
