history

The name Oberalm is derived from the pre-Latin Albantha (presumably alpenkeltisch , "Illyrian") and is in river names (supported) from Latin albus , white ', so comfortable in the importance on Almbach ' (see also Upper Albe for Almbach ). Oberalm is one of the earliest populated areas in the area around the Salzach Valley floor, and the area's settlement continuity from pre-Roman to early medieval times is assured.

The place was first mentioned in writing in the 8th century, when Duke Theodo from Bavaria transferred the Salzachgau to St. Rupert for the purpose of settlement and missionary work . The first mention is in the Breves Notitiae (789) - the name Oberalm appears in several passages of text - “ ecclesiam iuxta ripam, que vocatur Albina ” or “ hominum de Albina ” ('people from (Ober) Alm'). This manuscript is kept in the archives of the Archabbey of St. Peter . The monastery owned several farms subject to interest in Oberalm . Oberalm was mentioned as a market town as early as the Middle Ages. Furthermore, several important noble families had their residence in Oberalm - among others at the castles of Kahlsperg and Winkl .

Ludwig Wittgenstein lived for a while in his uncle's villa in the village and worked here on the Tractatus logico-philosophicus (published in 1921). The remains of the house, which was in poor condition, were demolished on December 1, 2015, despite protests.

In 1938, with the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, when large communities were formed everywhere in Austria, Oberalm became part of the city of Hallein on January 1, 1939 ("Groß-Hallein"). After the war, there was already a signature campaign in 1946 to reverse it, which brought a majority of around 85 percent (“Los von Hallein” movement). After lengthy negotiations about the valuable industrial area locations between Oberalm and Hallein, but also with Adnet around the Vorderwiestal , which had come there with the dissolution of Oberalm, as well as after further votes and citizen surveys, the Salzburg state parliament passed the law on 11 June 1952 on the re-establishment of a Market town of Oberalm. The cadastral community Oberalm II , today's Hallein district Neualm, and a border strip near Hühnerau remained with Hallein. The Vorderwiestal came back to Oberalm.
