Parish name

The name Puch is first mentioned as pouche in a document in 930 and was still written as a book in the 17th century . This name disappeared and until 1905 the community was called Thurnberg (today cadastral community). It was not until Mayor Schweitl that the decision was made in 1905 to introduce the place name Puch in its current form.

Local history

A Roman milestone , which is located today on the cemetery wall, marks the 7th mile of the important Roman trade route Juvavum - Teurnia (Salzburg - Spittal in Carinthia , which corresponds to today's Tauern Autobahn A 10) and was built around the year 200 AD erected under the emperor Septimius Severus .

The Puchstein castle seems loud old chronicles for the first time in the year 822 and was in the Middle Ages to monitor the salt waterway used. At the end of the 17th century, the castle, which subsequently served as a rental house with numerous hostels, was brought into its present form. While at the beginning of this century it was still subordinate to the Puch parish, the property is now divided between six apartment owners. The Urstein castle that appearing in documents in the 15th century in the possession of Golser family, emerged in its present form in 1691 under Alfonso Dückher Baron Haslau . This Baltic family owned this castle until 1867. Until 2002, it was owned by the Kuhlmann family. The owner then became the private foundation Akademie Schloss Urstein. The parish church is a beautiful, Gothic building with a pointed helmet tower, built in the 14th century. The baroque high altar dates from 1685. In 1735 the baroque side aisle was added, in which there are two carved wooden altars. On the church wall there are several large grave slabs made of red Adnet marble (a limestone), including those of Georg Golser (1465–1489), Bishop of Brixen . A wood-carved palm donkey with the figure of Christ is housed in a niche in the bell house of the parish church, which is carried during the procession every year on Palm Sunday .

The municipality of Puch with the districts of Sankt Jakob am Thurn and Hinterwiestal is one of the popular local recreation and tourism areas in the mountainous region southeast of the provincial capital of Salzburg and is increasingly developing into a residential area in the immediate vicinity of the city.

In May 2015, a newly built correctional facility in Puch-Urstein was put into operation. With more modern prison conditions than before in the city of Salzburg, around 200 prisoners work in 12 in-house companies that generate € 400,000 per year.
