Eli Yablonovitch
Eli Yablonovitch (born December 15, 1946 in Puch near Hallein , Austria ) is an American physicist .
life and work
Yablonovitch received his bachelor's degree from McGill University in 1967 . Then he moved to Harvard University , where he did his Masters in 1969 and received his PhD in Applied Physics in 1972 . He then worked for two years at Bell Laboratories to return to Harvard as Assistant Professor (1974-76) and Associate Professor (1976-79) of applied physics. He then did research on solar cells at the Exxon Research Center until 1984 , then at Bellcore until 1993, where he was director of solid-state physics research since 1990. In 1993 he became Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles . He has been a Northrop Grumman Professor there since 2005. In 1979 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ).
Yablonovitch conducts research in the field of nonlinear optics . He studied the interactions between plasma and laser and invented photonic crystals in 1987 . He also deals with photonic band structure , plasmons , optoelectronics , high-speed optical communication , quantum computers and quantum communication .
In 2016 he received the Oliver E. Buckley Prize for fundamental achievements in solar cells and quantum well lasers and especially for the creation of the research area photonic crystals, so that he pursued both basic research and practical applications (laudation).
