St. Jakob am Thurn Castle

The Sankt Jakob am Thurn Castle or the so-called Tower of St. Jakob is located in the district of the same name in the municipality of Puch near Hallein in the Hallein district of Salzburg . It is a listed building.

history

The tower probably dates from the 12th or 13th century. It was the seat of the Salzburg ministerial family von Thurn. This family held the office of burgraves in Salzburg; they could also collect the bridge toll in Salzburg. Presumably they were sitting on the Imberg . From 1403 they also owned the Neubünsch Castle on the Inn . In 1538 a Jörg Khnoll was named as a caretaker "zum Thurn". In 1572 an Andree Pleialter dies “zum Thurn in der Hofmark”. In 1647, after the death of Alexander Hieronymus Freiherrn von Thurn zu Neubänen, Johann von Plaz received the completed Salzburg fiefdom with the castle and Hofmark at St. Jakob am Thurn. Johann von Plaz was a nurse in Rosegg and Gmünd in Carinthia and at Hüttenstein Castle ; together with others he had put down the Zillertal uprising in 1645 . The von Plaz family was elevated to the rank of count in 1696. Today the Plaz are the only remaining noble family in Salzburg. In 1869 the knight's fief was all modified .

In 1924 the rule of St. Jakob was sold to the Dane Charlotte von Bornemann, married Wurmbrand-Stuppack. In 1939, due to a Gestapo decree , the building was incorporated into the Reichsgau Salzburg . In 1947 the property was returned to the previous owner. The current owners are Martin Stuart and Ulrike Flatz.

description

The tower has six floors and is made of quarry stone. The wall thickness on the ground floor is 1.90 m. The pyramid-shaped roof is crowned by a weather vane . The previously existing shingle roof was replaced by a slate roof. A three-story outbuilding with a gable roof was added in medieval times. Late Gothic window frames can be seen on both components. The entrance portals are made of stone and have a round arch shape. The portal leading into the tower has baroque shapes. A wall cross from the 16th century hangs next to it under a protective roof. The rooms in the extension are vaulted ( barrel vaults with stitch caps ). In the Baroque period , ceilings with simple stucco mirrors were attached to the rooms on the upper floor. The tower burned down twice in the 17th century and was renovated again.

The building is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
