Vegetative characteristics

The specular pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant with a branched underground rhizome .

The ever submerged permanent, alternate s leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The short petiole is winged. The simple leaf blade is elongated-ovoid and pointed (linear) with a length of up to 30 centimeters and a width of up to 4.5 centimeters. The main leaf veins are curved from the leaf base to the tip, the transverse veins, on the other hand, are very delicate. The leaf blade is slightly transparent and its surface is glossy. The leaf margins are finely serrated and rough. The relatively small stipules are transformed into narrow membranes, the base of which includes the stems.

Generative characteristics

The all-round, spiked inflorescence protrudes from the water during flowering. The hermaphroditic flowers consist of four stamens and four carpels , the flowers have no petals . To protect the reproductive organs, however, the development of the connectives anthers yellow greenish appendage resembling a four-leaf flower corolla.

The solitary fruits are blunt-keeled nuts and form a cluster fruit.

The basic chromosome number is x = 13; there is tetraploidy , i.e. a chromosome number of 2n = 52.

ecology

The specular pondweed is a floating or submerged aquatic plant .

The pollination is carried by the wind.

Occurrence

The distribution area ranges from the temperate areas of the northern hemisphere to the Philippines.

The glossy pondweed thrives in the tropical zone of East Asia and from the meridional to the boreal zone of Europe and West Asia . It grows in nutrient-rich, stagnant or slow-flowing waters at depths of 1.5 to 3.0 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises at Freibergsee near Oberstdorf to an altitude of 928 meters.

The glossy pondweed is a character species of Potamogetonetum lucentis from the Potamogetonion association .

Taxonomy

The first publication of Potamogeton lucens was in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum .
