etymology

The name Schermberg is derived from the old German expression Scherm and means umbrella, shelter.

Ascent

The mountain can be reached from the Almtalerhaus (714 m) in the Hetzau via the Welser hut (1726 m) in about 5 hours of walking. The last 600 meters in altitude can also be overcome on the Tassilo via ferrata ( difficulty C ) built in 2009, which branches off about 10 minutes after the Welser Hut at the Teicheln.

The Schermbergler

Climbers of the first ascent of the Schermberg north face in 1929 via the Wels and Linz routes and the first ascent of the Almtalerköpfl north face ( IV ) (1930) founded the "Alpine Gilde D'Schermbergler" on December 16, 1930. In 1932 the association erected a tripod at the summit . From 1934 the Schermberglauf is carried out, a giant slalom run from the lower summit of the Schermberg about 200 m down to the Fleischbanksattel. On May 18, 1951, the Alpine Club decided that the Schermberglers would become the High Tourist Group (HG) of the Wels section of the PES. As of May 2019, the association has 34 members. Next to the Almtalerhaus is the "(Franz Oberrauch) Stüberl", a hut for members and their families.
