history

The development of the Dead Mountains took place at the end of the 19th century almost exclusively from the Stodertal and Aussee . It was not until the Wels section, under its chairman Sepp Huber, that the Almtal and Dead Mountains began to be developed from the north. Sepp Huber was instrumental in creating the north-facing climbs to the karst plateau, such as the Grießkarsteig, and in tough negotiations with the landowners, he pushed through the construction of shelters. The first Welser hut was opened in 1920. Just one year later, the section leased the Almtalerhaus in the Hetzau, a former hunting lodge. In 1921/22 the Sepp-Huber-Steig was built over the Röllsattel and in 1927 the Pühringerhütte was opened. This first Welser hut was destroyed by an avalanche in 1923. The second hut was completed in 1923 and expanded in 1930. This was abandoned when the current building was built from 1969 to 1971.
