The Hohe Krippenstein is a 2,108 m high, popular panoramic mountain on the northern edge of the Dachstein Mountains in Upper Austria . It has the shape of a double summit : 500 m away from the Hohe Krippenstein there is a very rocky summit of 2,034 m, which carries a transmitter mast and the so-called pioneer cross. There is a mountain chapel not far from the main summit .

The limestone of the Krippenstein rises directly above Lake Hallstatt (508 m), a total of 1600 m above the lake. It was the first two-thousand- meter peak to be accessed by a cable car - as a middle station from Obertraun to the Dachstein cable car leading to the southern part of the mountain range . It was built from 1947 and soon afterwards continued in a third section to the Gjaidalm . In 2007, the two sections between Obertraun and the Krippenstein (middle station Schönbergalm) were renewed for around 10 million euros in 8 months. The official opening of the renovated Dachstein-Krippensteinbahn took place on January 12, 2008.

While the pre-summit with the Pioneers Cross drops to the north in the direction of Lake Hallstatt with an extremely steep rocky slope , the main summit has its steepest flanks in the west and north-east. The mountain station of the cable car is about 100 m east of this summit, the Lodge am Krippenstein about 250 m to the south.

In connection with the nomination of the Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , some new facilities were also built on the Krippenstein. The view of the Dachstein peaks has been declared a "WeltNATURerbeblick". On the main summit of the Krippenstein, a viewing platform with a spiral staircase, the “World Heritage Spiral”, was created. It resembles a ship in shape and is surrounded by loungers. Above the steep drop of the pre-summit, a lookout pulpit with five exits was built: Five Fingers .

Lower Krippenstein

The Niedere Krippenstein (1989 m) is less prominent and is located 1 km to the southwest of the main summit, and the Krippenstein cave (a large karst cave ) - on a well-marked trail about 1 km to the southeast, which continues to the nearby Margschierf (2,080 m). The small Däumelsee lies on the karst plateau to the north .

Ascent

The approximately five-hour ascent to the Krippenstein with its north-facing summit is possible on two routes from Obertraun . Due to the steepness of the terrain, both climbs have to describe a wide arc: the western route leads from the village of Winkl under the rock face of the Schafeck (1256 m) to the ice pit , where it joins the eastern route coming from Obertraun. This route continues via the mountain village of Krippenbrunn (former middle station of the HGV cable car) via the descent and the valley station of the 3rd section of the Dachsteinbahn. A third route variant is possible from Obertraun over the Schönbergalm (approx. 1350 m), where the first section of the cable car leads; In 2008, a decentralized part of the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition on the topics of environmental protection, ice and karst caves will be set up here. Because not far from the middle station is the large Dachstein giant ice cave .

The panoramic view on the Hohen Krippenstein extends from the karst plateau in the southeast, the three Dachstein peaks and the glaciers in the south far to the west, while the view to the north extends over Lake Hallstatt to the Sarstein , which is a similarly high eye-catcher the depth of the room and the winding The upper course of the Traun makes you aware. The Dead Mountains and the Grimming appear in the northeast and east .

Other special features of the mountain are some caves and alpine pastures. Partly protected flora and isolated sites of eye stones .

The Salzkammergutbahn serves as a feeder to the Krippenstein area and the cable car, which touches the south of the extensive mountain range from the central region of Upper Austria and continues into the Ausseer Land . Numerous lead from the Krippenstein even walks further into the high mountains - including the Heilbronner circular trail in about 3 hours of the imposing Dachstein plateau .
