5 Fingers is a viewing platform on the Krippenstein , a 2108  m high mountain on the northern edge of the Dachstein Mountains in Upper Austria . The viewing platform was named because of its hand-like shape and is accessible free of charge.

The "fingers" are around 4 meters long and were built over a chasm of around 400 m deep. Similar structures are often referred to as skywalk , for example the Dachstein Skywalk on the south side of the Dachstein. The viewing platform can be reached after a 20-minute walk from the Krippenstein mountain station of the Dachstein cable car. It was officially opened in October 2006 to offer a view of the World Heritage region .

particularities

  • A metal frame was mounted on the first finger (from left to right) to allow visitors to take a “framed” souvenir photo.
  • The second finger was provided with a glass bottom to enable visitors to look directly into the abyss.
  • The third finger is shorter than the others and cannot be walked to the end. It has the shape of a springboard and is supposed to symbolize the freedom of the mountains.
  • The fourth finger has an opening in the floor, which also reveals a view into the abyss.
  • A free telescope was installed on the fifth finger.

The viewing platform is illuminated in the dark until midnight and can therefore also be seen in the evening in the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun .
