The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car opens up the northern part of the Dachstein massif from the Upper Austrian town of Obertraun . The cable car operates in the summer and winter seasons and opens up the mountain region of the Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Plant, construction history and operation

The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car is a three sections aerial tramway . It overcomes a total difference in altitude of 1760 m and reaches a maximum distance to the ground of up to 172 meters.

The first section to the Schönbergalm has been in operation since 1951. With a speed of 12 m / s (= 43.2 km / h), the cable car covers the 742 meters of altitude and 1734 meters of incline in just 4 minutes. It represents an important tourism factor, as the world-famous Dachstein Ice Cave and Dachstein Mammoth Cave are located on the Schönbergalm . After the new construction of the cable car in 2007 (opening before the start of the winter season) it only reaches a speed of 8 m / s in winter operation in order to synchronize the travel time with the second section and thus avoid waiting times.

The second section runs over a length of 2285 meters. This section was put into operation in 1956 and is particularly important for winter use of the Dachstein, as the Krippenstein mountain station at 2100  m is the starting point for the existing ski runs and the "Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein" ski area is becoming increasingly popular, especially with freeriders. Her travel time is 5.8 minutes, with a speed of 10 m / s (= 36 km / h). It was also completely renovated in 2007, whereby the capacity was increased to 60 passengers. From here, the newly built 5 Fingers viewing platform is a 20-minute walk away.

The third section was opened in 1961 and has remained in operation since then. It leads at a speed of 7 m / s (= 25.2 km / h) down to the Gjaidalm .

The fourth section, which should have led from the Gjaidalm towards Dachstein, was never built. The glacier was finally made accessible with the Dachstein-Südwandbahn lift from Ramsau am Dachstein . From the Dachstein Glacier ski area there is a 25-kilometer off-piste descent, the Dachstein crossing , to Obertraun - a return with the lift is not possible.

The former Oberfeld barracks was not supplied by the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car, but had its own group shuttle, consisting of two sections (middle station Krippenbrunn). However, this railway had only limited public service. So there was the curious possibility of taking a cable car tour around an entire mountain. This line has since been dismantled.

The cable car is operated by Dachstein Tourismus AG , which is also responsible for visiting the Dachstein caves.
