According to the self-description, the SRA uses a "very 'broad' 'interpretation of the term pop, but without collecting and researching activities in the field of operetta, hits, folk music and classical music". The sound carrier archive goes back to the 1950s, but mainly covers appearances since 1977 (the beginning of the punk era).

The archive began in 1993 as a project for the music journal skug called Skug Research . In 1996 the project was spun off from the music magazine and got its current name in 1997. From 1997 to 2002 the SRA was located at the Music Information Center Austria (mica), and since 2002 it has been located in its own premises in Vienna's Museum Quarter .
