Roland Josef Leopold Neuwirth (born October 31, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian author , singer and composer . Neuwirth is working on the renewal of the Wienerlied with his band Extremschrammeln with the line-up Doris Windhager (over vote), Manfred Kammerhofer ( violin ), Bernie Mallinger (violin), Michael Radanovics (violin) and Marko Živadinović ( button accordion ) .

biography

Neuwirth's mother worked as a special school teacher , his father was a painter , sculptor and restorer in the carriage castle of Schönbrunn . His uncle gave him a harmonica , which is why Neuwirth began making music as a child. At around 13 he began to play the guitar as an autodidact , and at eighteen he played bass in a jazz band . Later he developed more towards blues and rock . At a concert in Jazzland Neuwirth stated that “he was not a colored man, but 'born in Floridsdorf' and not in Chicago.” He now turned to the Wienerlied and Schrammel music .

In 1973 Neuwirth began studying guitar with Luise Walker at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, which he finished in 1977. During his studies he founded the "Neuwirth Schrammeln" which later changed into the "Extremeschrammeln".

Neuwirth is a trained typesetter and, before he became a professional musician (1985), worked as a typesetter in the party slip printing company Lischkar & Co. at Migazziplatz 4 in Meidling (very well known in Vienna) .

The head of the "Extremschrammeln" wrote about 300 songs for duo and Schrammel cast, as well as dances, waltzes and new tones, some orchestral works, theater, film and radio play music. His ensemble has existed since 1974 and has recorded 13 records to date.

Neuwirth and his ensemble stand for the renewal of the Wienerlied, for which they received the City of Vienna's Special Prize in 1984, were awarded the Nestroy Ring in 1994 and the City of Vienna's Silver Medal of Honor in 2002.

From 1988 to 2006 he was under contract with Warner Music Austria. After the fusion of Schrammel music and pop sound on his first Warner CD Guat it comes - after frequent changes of the strings - to the current classical line-up with the specific sound: Roland Neuwirth (vocals and double guitar), Doris Windhager (upper part), Manfred Kammerhofer (1st violin), Bernie Mallinger (2nd violin) and Marko Živadinović (chromatic “button” harmonica). His Schrammeln received the highest award not only for their work with the poets H. C. Artmann and Ernst Jandl, but also for paying their last respects to deceased fans. In addition to the publication of the book Das Wienerlied (Zsolnay) and a CD anthology The best Schrammeln with historical recordings (Trikont), Neuwirth is a guest lecturer at schools, including the Vienna University of Music.

The Extremschrammeln tour regularly through Austria; in addition there are always appearances in Germany. Concert tours have also taken Roland Neuwirth and his musicians to Croatia, Bosnia, France, Greece, the Cape Verde Islands, the USA and Canada. Numerous appearances in film and TV, as well as two TV portraits. His brother is the graphic artist, painter and sculptor Peter Neuwirth . Neuwirth grew up in Vienna- Hernals and reported about it in the ORF -Doku Mein Hernals .

On September 23, 2016 Neuwirth and the Extremschrammeln started their farewell tour.

Neuwirth was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Music in 2017 .

With the Viennese radio.string.quartet he recorded the album Erd , in April 2020 the song I hab die Welt neich invented was released from it.
