Life and accomplishments
Growing up in London as a child of Jamaican parents, Carter performed as a singer with artists such as Working Week , Osibisa , Wayne Shorter , Bolo Bolo and Jennifer Rush across Europe. In 1988 she moved to Vienna and was soon able to gain a foothold in the city's club music scene. Here she sang with musicians like the Bingo Boys , Count Basic and Jon Sass , was a vocalist in the group Sketches and worked with musicians from Rainhard Fendrich to Friedrich Gulda and Hans Theessink . In 1994 she appeared at the final concert of the Ars Electronica in Linz and took on the role of the Virgin Mary in a project by Willi Resetarits , a musical Advent reading with HC Artmann in Salzburg . A black woman as Mother of God caused confusion, outrage and even protests at the time. For the Life Ball in Vienna City Hall she contributed the Life Ball Song of 2001.
With Dorretta Carter & Her FunkMonsters she founded her first own band, for which she composed the songs and worked on arrangements with the jazz pianist and composer Paul Urbanek . Carter writes texts for his own compositions and adapted instrumental pieces. Carter is also the singer of the Heavy Tuba formation .
In 2007 she founded her new band project Dorretta Carters HOT POT with Thomas Lang (guitar), Ivan Ruiz (bass) and Eldis La Rosa (percussion) , with which she mainly plays her own compositions. Her style moves between jazz , soul and funk . One of her last appearances at major events was the 4-day 70th Birthday Bash for Hans Theessink in April 2018 in the Vienna Metropol.
Carter has six siblings.
