Ars Electronica
The Ars Electronica ( Latin Electronic Art ) is a festival for the presentation and promotion of art in close connection with ( digital ) technology and social issues , which takes place annually in Linz ( Upper Austria ). The organizer is Ars Electronica Linz GmbH, an Austrian cultural, educational and scientific institute that is active in the field of new media art and was founded in Linz in 1979. It is based in the Ars Electronica Center, which houses the Museum of the Future, in the city of Linz. The interactions between art, technology and society are at the heart of Ars Electronica's activities.
history
The first Ars Electronica was opened on September 18, 1979 as part of the international Bruckner Festival together with the first Linz Klangwolke and the music of Bruckner's Eighth Symphony . The metal forum is sometimes mentioned as a project forerunner . The festival was initiated by Hannes Leopoldseder from ORF - Upper Austria and Horst Stadlmayr , artistic director of the Brucknerhaus in Linz . The festival initially took place every two years and since 1986 annually. It is financed by the City of Linz, the Province of Upper Austria and the Republic of Austria as well as private partners. The conception of Ars Electronica as a forum for the exchange of ideas and a place for the presentation of projects at the interface of art, technology and society went to Hannes Leopoldseder, director of the ORF regional studio Upper Austria, the electronic musician Hubert Bognermayr , the music producer Ulrich Rützel and the cyberneticist and physicist Herbert W. Franke back. This series of events was one of the first worldwide to deal with digital art and its possibilities as well as the social effects of digital technology .

festival
The Ars Electronica Festival, the cornerstone of Ars Electronica, has been held annually in Linz since 1979, accompanied by a great deal of media coverage. It is the most important international festival of digital art , which presents trends and long-term developments in a future-oriented way in the form of artistic works, discussion forums and scientific support. Until 1995 it was managed by Peter Weibel , since 1996 by Gerfried Stocker .
Exhibitions and performances take place in the Ars Electronica Center, in the Brucknerhaus, in the Lentos , in the rooms of the University for Artistic and Industrial Design and at various other locations in Linz. Only in 2010 were all exhibitions, symposia and the awarding of the Prix Ars Electronica brought together in one place, the buildings of the former Linz tobacco factory .
The focus is on various collaborations with research institutions such as the University of Tokyo (2008), the MIT Media Lab (2009) or the Japan Media Arts Festival (2009), which will present their activities as part of the festival. Media art projects funded by Ars Electronica take place regularly in cooperation with companies and research institutions such as CERN .
During the festival, in addition to the exhibitions, symposia on techno-cultural phenomena and the philosophical-theoretical aspects of technological development will be held with the participation of international experts.
