The Brucknerhaus is a concert hall named after Anton Bruckner on the Danube in the provincial capital Linz in Upper Austria .

history

As early as 1930, a concert organized by the Upper Austrian Heimatverein to create a Bruckner concert hall took place in the Linz Commercial Club House . After Austria's annexation in 1938, Adolf Hitler planned a concert hall on the Blumau in addition to other cultural buildings, for example in the area of today's music theater , but nothing of this was realized. After the Second World War, the Brucknerbund, concert organizer Gerhard Schröder and cathedral music director Josef Kronsteiner organized benefit concerts for the construction of a Bruckner Hall in Linz in 1949 , which took place in 1950 and 1951 under the direction of Herbert von Karajan in the gym of the Diesterweg School. In 1960, Mayor Ernst Koref and Governor Heinrich Gleißner made the decision in principle for the construction, and the 1962 architectural competition was won by the Finnish architect Heikki Sirén. However, political disputes broke out over the project, especially whether a sports hall or a concert hall was a more urgent project to be built, which once again delayed construction. In 1969 the groundbreaking ceremony for the Brucknerhaus finally took place.

The concert and event house, run by the Linz Event Company Ltd ( LIVA ), was built in 1974 according to the plans of the Finnish architects Kaija and Heikki Sirén and planned with particular attention to excellent acoustic properties. The opening of the Brucknerhaus with the conductor Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic took place on March 23, 1974 with a live broadcast of the ceremony on the 1st program of Austrian television . Horst Stadlmayr was the first GD of the Brucknerhaus. Margareta Wöss was the music director . Karl Gerbel followed from Stadlmayr as GD. The music directors in his time were Reinhard Kannonier and Thomas Schlee. It was only with Wolfgang Winkler, from 1998, that the management of the house was merged with the artistic direction.

Regular events

organ

The organ of the Brucknerhaus was built in 1973 by the organ building company Flentrop (Schiedam). The slider chests -instrument has 51 registers on three manual works and pedal . The game actions are mechanical. The stop action is electric. Due to the dilapidated condition and the lack of the possibility of maintenance of the old organ, the existing organ was rebuilt from June 2018 by the Austrian organ building company Rieger . The facade of the old organ was preserved. As part of the International Bruckner Festival Linz 2018 , the new organ was officially inaugurated on September 10, 2018 by the titular organist of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie , Iveta Apkalna .
