life and career

Youth and education

Frey comes from a family originally from East Prussia . He attended school in Hanover . He received piano lessons and took six years of church organ lessons , which he completed by taking the C organist examination. At the age of eight he joined the Hanover Boys Choir , to which he belonged for ten years. In 1984 he graduated from high school in his hometown. Subsequently, he did his military service .

He then began studying singing at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . At the same time he took a degree in music theater directing with Götz Friedrich . In 1989 he staged in cooperation with the Hamburg State Opera as a study project Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss . During his studies he performed as a singer for operas and concerts. He was also an assistant director in Hamburg and Stockholm and staged five more of his own productions at studio theaters in Rostock and Detmold . As a result, he enrolled in the new university course in cultural management with Hermann Rauhe and Peter Ruzicka .

Early theater work

Time in Dresden

In May 1997 Frey was engaged as artistic director of the Saxon State Opera Dresden at the Semperoper . There he operated an internationalization of singing politics. When the Semperoper had to close in August 2002 as a result of the flooding of the Elbe , he initiated the production Carmen with Harry Kupfer - a version based on Georges Bizet in the VW Transparent Factory on the edge of the Great Garden . The piece was performed there for a month before the 2002/2003 season could be recorded at the headquarters of the State Opera in 2002. In the summer of 2003 Frey was appointed opera director. Under his leadership, the Dresden Opera Ball was reintroduced in early 2006 after a 67-year hiatus on the occasion of the city's 800th anniversary .

In April 2007 he was retired from his position at the Semperoper.

Intendant in Bremen

On August 1, 2007, Frey took over from Klaus Pierwoß, who was in office for 13 years, at Theater Bremen . A process accompanying his term of office should be the repositioning of the theater as a holistic cultural brand beyond the stage. During the artistic directorship of Frey, the Bremen Theater entered into a cooperation with the St. Stephani Cultural Church , which included, among other things, theater sermons on certain plays. In addition, the Bremen Theater Gallery was established in the foyer of the Theater am Goetheplatz , where works of art by GABO , Armin Mueller-Stahl , Anna Thalbach , Christian Ludwig Attersee and Ai Wei Wei were presented. As a highlight, he developed the concept of the Bremen lake stage with a capacity of 2500 spectators on the former site of the AG Weser , where an opera performance could be seen for a week in the summer. There he directed Der Fliegende Holländer (2008), Aida (2009) and Turandot (2010).

At the beginning of his tenure, Frey had announced the production of the musical Marie Antoinette by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay . This was performed from January to May 2009 in the Bremen Musical Theater with funds from the Bremen Theater and voted "Musical of the Year" 2009. The production costs amounted to 5.8 million euros. Instead of the expected 120,000 spectators, only 90,000 attended the performances.

He wanted to fulfill his contract by the end of 2017. In November 2017, Frey left his job at LIVA.

The Moscow chamber opera Boris Pokrowski has been invited several times to the Bruckner Festival in Linz. Frey's relations with Russia are based on long-term international contacts with Putin and with the cellist and Putin's confidante Sergei Roldugin .

In 2010 he organized the opera gala for the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg on the occasion of the 150th anniversary. In September 2011, the international singing competition Competizione dell 'Opera took place at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow under Frey's direction. This was the first time that this singing competition was held outside of Germany. This competition took place in 2012 at the Bolshoi Theater in Minsk ( Belarus ). In 2011, a gala organized by Frey to mark the 50th anniversary of the twinning between Dresden and Saint Petersburg was performed under the musical direction of Vladimir Jurowski at the Mikhailovsky Theater . This production received the international cultural award of the Republic of Belarus as the best opera production of the 2013/14 season. In October 2014 he staged Così fan tutte at the State Theater in Ulan-Ude, followed by Tosca in Vladivostok in April 2015, and Ariadne auf Naxos at the Moscow chamber opera Boris Pokrowski in 2016 .

In 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009, in cooperation with the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden , he revived the “Anton G. Rubinstein” piano competition, the final concert of which took place in the Semperoper in 2009, as well as the international ones held in 2004 by the Forum Tiberius Composition competition in the Gläserne Manufaktur .

Controversy

According to the judgment of the Federal Court of Justice, Naomi Campbell did not have to be rewarded for appearing at the Semper Opera Ball that lasted only a few minutes in 2015 . The originally agreed fee was 55,930 euros. Hans-Joachim Frey said he had canceled his engagement the day before. Campbell only took the stage for a few minutes to receive the Order of St. George.

The award of the Order of St. George to the Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi as part of the Semper Opera Ball 2020 was followed by fierce public and political criticism. Frey praised as-Sisi as a “peacemaker”, “encourager” and “voice of Africa”. Frey was silent about who specifically made the decision to award the gold medal to as-Sisi “for reasons of state protection”. Ball boss Frey had already confused past winners of the Order of St. George. Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin received the medal.
