Karl Scheidemantel (* 29. January 1859 in Weimar , † 26. June 1923 in Dresden ) was a German opera singer ( baritone ) - director and -Director.

Life

The son of the grand ducal court cabinet maker Hermann Scheidemantel from Weimar was successful through various roles in operas by Richard Wagner .

His sponsors included Bodo Borchers in Weimar, Julius Stockhausen in Frankfurt am Main and Franz Liszt . He made his debut at the Court Theater in Weimar in 1878 , where he remained engaged until 1886. He then sang at the Dresden Court Opera until 1911 . He spent 25 years of his creative work there and in 1884 was appointed "Grand Ducal Saxon Chamber Singer ".

From 1884 he made guest appearances in Milan, London, Vienna and Berlin.

He sang at the Bayreuth Festival in 1886, 1888, 1891 and 1892 . With Cosima Wagner he exchanged ideas about what was happening on the stage. In April and May 1890 he sang the roles of Heiling, René (Renato), Zampa, Wolfram, Luna and Sachs at major European theaters, including the Vienna Court Opera . In 1892 he also made guest appearances at La Scala in Milan . The singer Karl Perron was one of his closest friends .

Scheidemantel bought the villa at Striesener Platz 8 in Dresden in 1891 . In June 1897 he married the royal court theater choir singer Hedwig Lehnert in the Annenkirche .

On June 8, 1911, he took his stage farewell in Dresden in the role of Hans Sachs in Wagner's Meistersingern von Nürnberg . Before that he shone in the world premiere of Richard Strauss ' Rosenkavalier . Then he went back to Weimar, where he distinguished himself as a music teacher. He also worked as a director and also as a translator of opera libretti.

1920–22 he returned to Dresden as director of the Dresden Opera . He is buried in the urn grove Tolkewitz (Dresden).

Honors

Scheidemantelstraße was named in his honor in Dresden.
