history

The choir dealt early on with historical performance practice of early music and found a quality of the interpretations that made it known far beyond the borders of Germany.

The repertoire of the choir includes works from the Venetian multi- choir to contemporary compositions. The ensemble can look back on a long tradition of performing vocal music from the 17th and 18th centuries . Initially, great attention was paid to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach , documented, among other things, by participating in the complete recording of Das Kantatenwerk ( Teldec ) (see church cantatas by J. S. Bach ) and two recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's motets.

Today the choir shows a wide range and flexibility in its work. These not only include z. B. the symphonies of Gustav Mahler , Orff's Carmina Burana and Schönberg's Gurrelieder , but also z. For example, participating in film music concerts by the NDR Radiophilharmonie and dealing with contemporary composers such as John Rutter , Eric Whitacre and Krzysztof Penderecki .

In 1979, under the direction of Heinz Hennig, a recording of the Marian Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi was made , which set a high standard for the interpretation of this work for the time. The works of Heinrich Schütz followed . Between 1982 and 1999 the choir made five Schütz recordings under the direction of Heinz Hennig, which are considered to be the pioneers of the performance practice of Heinrich Schütz's work. Four of these recordings were awarded prizes, including the German Record Prize. All Schütz recordings by the boys 'choir received the French Diapason d'or critics' award .

In addition, numerous recordings of French choral music (masses and Requiem settings by Charpentier, Vierne, Duruflé, Widor; motets by Orlando di Lasso and others) as well as recordings of modern and contemporary compositions (psalm symphony, mass 1948, cantata “Babel” by Igor Stravinsky , works by Alfred Koerppen and others).

The Hanover Boys Choir works regularly with musicians such as Gustav Leonhardt , Ton Koopman , Jordi Savall , John Eliot Gardiner , Philippe Herreweghe , Kent Nagano , Christoph Eschenbach , Alan Gilbert and others. a. together with internationally important instrumental ensembles such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra , the Berlin Academy of Early Music and numerous German symphony orchestras.

In 2006 the Knabenchor Hannover received the Echo Klassik award in the category choral work recording of the year for its CD “Verleih uns Frieden” (world premiere after 300 years of rediscovered works by Andreas Hammerschmidt , Rondeau Production ) . 2010 followed by another ECHO Klassik in the category “Choral Work Recording of the Year - (Choir / Ensemble Music 20th – 21st Century) Accompagnato” for the CD “Songs of Faith - New Cantatas for the Church Year ” - a project with recordings of nine Hanoverian choirs .

As the representative of the state of Lower Saxony, the Hanover Boys Choir performed at the central celebration of the day of national mourning in the German Bundestag in Berlin in 2013 at the suggestion of the Prime Minister. The Lower Saxony representation at the European Parliament invited the choir to a concert in Brussels in the same year. In addition to concerts and festival participation at home and abroad, u. a. in Israel, Japan, Russia, South and Central America, the USA and South Africa, CD recordings as well as radio and television recordings are also regularly on the program for the Hanover Boys Choir.

In 2018 the boys' choir made its debut in performances of Mahler's 3rd Symphony under Alan Gilbert at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg .
