Ulfert Smidt (* 1958 ) is a German church musician , lecturer at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and a multiple award-winning organist at the Marktkirche in Hanover .

Life

Ulfert Smidt grew up in the Hanseatic City of Bremen and received organ lessons there from the age of eleven . He studied church music with Ulrich Bremsteller , professor of Protestant church music at the Hanover University of Music and Theater, and passed his A-exam there in 1985 . Funded by a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation "his way to Amsterdam led to Piet Kee and Ewald Kooiman and thus to the most important organs in the Netherlands ". Michael Radulescu and Harald Vogel also influenced Smidt's organ playing.

After Ulfert Smidt initially worked as a church musician and organ auditor in Holzminden and Bremen, he has been the organist of the Marktkirche in Hanover since 1996. He is the artistic director of the International Organ Concerts series listed there . Numerous concerts by Smidt have been released as CDs , including on the three organs of the Marktkirche Hannover, the Italian organ , the organ for the ensembles of the choirs and the great organ. In 2012, a joint production of Christmas carols with Ulfert Smidt on the organ, the boys' choir Hanover under the direction of Jörg Breiding and Sky du Mont as speaker was created in the church of the Stephansstift in Hanover under the title Gloria in excelsis Deo .

Smidt is a lecturer at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.

Ulfert Smidt's work is documented on numerous CDs, including the entire organ works by Johannes Brahms , North German organ music and transcriptions of works by César Franck . Smidt's stylistic spectrum also includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Frank Martin and Olivier Messiaen . Smidt's recordings received renowned awards such as the German Record Critics' Prize and the ECHO Klassik .
