Ulf Kenklies

Ulf Kenklies (born May 5, 1941 in Northeim , Lower Saxony ) is a German singer , lyric tenor and choir director.

Life

Ulf Kenklies has his musical roots in the Hanover Boys Choir, which he joined when he was 10 years old. As a result, he received singing lessons and worked there for several years as a voice trainer. As an enthusiastic choir and ensemble singer, he became a member of the opera choir of the Lower Saxony State Opera in Hanover in 1965 without studying . From 1965 to 1969 he studied singing with Otto Köhler at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media . He made his final diploma as a singing teacher in 1969 (final concert under the musical direction of Siegfried Schick ). In 1969 he took up an engagement in the choir of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (today: NDR Chor ), to which he belonged until his retirement in 2005.

Act

During his engagement in the choir of the NDR, Ulf Kenklies managed to embark on a remarkable career as an oratorio and concert singer. After successfully taking part in the Mozart Competition in Salzburg , numerous radio recordings and television appearances followed, as well as concert tours to other European countries, to Israel and America. Participation in festivals in Athens, Bergen, Donaueschingen and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival were supplemented by opera guest performances, such as at the Hamburg State Opera and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice . Kenklies sang a. a. under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt , Gustav Kuhn , Fabio Luisi , Hans Zender and Günter Wand .

His extensive repertoire includes all important works of concert literature from Bach to Stravinsky. An easy, well-fitting and relaxed height allowed him to appear in works of different subjects, such as the Passions by Johann Sebastian Bach , the Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi and the Missa solemnis by Ludwig van Beethoven . His great Buffonese talent ensured him great success in over 160 performances of the scenic cantata Carmina Burana by Carl Orff .

Teaching

From 1988 to 1991 he had a teaching position for voice training at the University of Bremen . In 2017 Kenklies gave a recital in China and led a singing workshop.

Activity as a choir director

Since 1972 Ulf Kenklies has also worked as a choir director. Occasionally, his concerts also include his own compositions based on his own texts.
