List of Bach cantatas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas . In addition to the great passions , oratorios and the B minor mass , the Bach cantatas are among his most important sacred works. Of the 300 or so cantatas that Bach is said to have composed, around 200 have survived.

Remarks

  1. SATB : There is a letter for each voice, SATBSATB , for example , denotes a work with two choirs .
  2. For reasons of space alone, the sounds in BWV 198 are also given in this column . These are plucked instruments.
  3. Bach always understands Flauto to be a recorder and expressly prescribes Flauto traverso for a transverse flute.
  4. a b c d In addition to the keyboard instrument (mostly organ for sacred cantatas, harpsichord for secular cantatas), the figured bass part also includes the cello, the violone and possibly the bassoon. These instruments are therefore only mentioned when it its own (mostly solo) for her voice is in addition.
  5. Bach understands Flauto piccolo to be a high soprano recorder in the tuning f² (BWV 96) or d² (BWV 103).
  6. The timpani are classified under the brass instruments, since Bach always uses them as the "bass" of the trumpet choir.

columns

The list can be sorted according to the BWV number, the title, its determination in the church year , the year of creation and the date of the premiere, as far as it is known. In the other columns the line- up is given, i.e. the singers and instrumentalists planned by Bach, sorted by groups.

In the Comment column it is noted if it is anything other than a sacred cantata by JS Bach or if the music is only partially preserved or not at all. This can also be read from the color coding ( see above ).

In the penultimate column there is a link to the Bach Cantata Page (BCP), where the complete texts, the structure and further detailed information can be found. In the last column there is a link to the sheet music of the old Bach Society Complete Edition ( IMSLP ).
