List of Bach cantatas |
You shepherd Israel, hear ( BWV 104), is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach .
Emergence
In his first year in office in Leipzig, Bachs composed the cantata for the Sunday Misericordias Domini , the second Sunday after Easter, and performed it for the first time on April 23, 1724.
Subject
The work begins with a quote from Ps 80.2 EU . The psalm asks God as the Shepherd of the people of Israel for deliverance. The text from the Tanakh is referred to in the New Testament , especially in the so-called “shepherd's speech” from the Gospel of John ( Jn 10 EU ), to Jesus Christ as the good shepherd . He also appears in the cantata, which speaks of God in the first three parts and Jesus in parts 4–5. The cantata closes with a simple chorale , a rewording of Psalm 23 by Cornelius Becker from 1598. This psalm also addresses God, but its visual language is related to Jesus in Christianity .
As in some of his other works and as is often the case in the Baroque, Bach underlines the image of the shepherd through the emphatically peaceful, pastoral character of the music.
Occupation and structure
The cantata has two soloists, tenor and bass , four-part choir, two oboe d'amore , taille ( baroque oboe in tenor position), two violins , viola and basso continuo .
- Coro: You Shepherd Israel, listen
- Recitativo (tenor): The highest shepherd worries before me
- Aria (tenor): My shepherd hides too long
- Recitativo (bass): Yes, this word is the food of my soul
- Aria (bass): Happy flock, Jesus' sheep
- Chorale: The Lord is my faithful shepherd
particularities
This lesser-known work is one of Bach's larger cantatas. The multiple mentions of the play in Maarten 't Hart's bestselling novel The Rage of the Whole World may have contributed to its increased popularity in recent years.
