List of Bach cantatas |
Jesus took the twelve ( BWV 22) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed it for the Sunday Estomihi and performed it for the first time in Leipzig on February 7, 1723.
Story and words
Bach wrote the cantata in Leipzig for Estomihi on Sunday . It is the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and thus the last Sunday before Good Friday on which a cantata was performed, as the tempus clausum was observed in Leipzig during the Passion . In 1723, the cantata was a test piece for Bach's application for the office of Thomaskantor , together with you true God and David's son (BWV 23).
The prescribed readings for Sunday were 1 Cor 13 : 1–13 LUT and Lk 18 : 31–43 LUT , the healing of a blind man and the associated announcement of suffering in Jerusalem. The unknown lyricist focuses on the announcement of suffering. The first sentence uses verses 31 and 34 of the Gospel as text, accordingly the tenor begins as an evangelist , while the bass as Vox Christi reproduces the direct speech of Jesus. The following sentences include the Christian present in the group of disciples who do not understand what is happening. The final chorale is the 5th and last stanza of Elisabeth Cruciger's song Herr Christ, der unig Gotts Sohn .
Bach performed the cantata again on February 20, 1724.
Occupation and structure
The cantata is occupied by three soloists ( alto , tenor and bass ), four-part choir, oboe , two violins , viola and basso continuo .
