The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge (also short: Trinity College Choir ) is the mixed choir of Trinity College in the University of Cambridge .
history
The beginnings of the choir go back to the 14th century when choir members of the Chapel Royal studied in the King's Hall , which today belongs to Trinity College, from which an initially all male choir was formed. Music directors at the time included Charles Villiers Stanford , Alan Gray , Raymond Leppard and Richard Marlow . It was not until the 1980s that Richard Marlow integrated female voices into the choir.
The choir today
Today the choir of scholarship holders in undergraduate studies comprises around 30 singers and 2 organists. Stephen Layton has been music director since 2006 .
During the semesters, the main role of the choir is to practice the liturgical tradition in Trinity College Chapel , which draws on both Catholic and Protestant roots. The choir produced its phonograms for Hyperion Records in collaboration with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment , City of London Sinfonia , Britten Sinfonia and Academy of Ancient Music and won a Gramophone Award . On its concert tours, the choir was a guest of the American Guild of Organists in 2012.
In January 2011, The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge was named 5th of the 20 Greatest Choirs of the World by Gramophone magazine .
