List of Bach cantatas

Mr. Christ, the Son of God ( BWV 96) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed it in Leipzig for the 18th Sunday after Trinity , October 8th, 1724.

Origin and Words

Bach wrote the cantata in 1724 in his second cantata cycle, which initially consisted exclusively of choral cantatas . The prescribed readings are 1 Cor 1: 4–8  LUT and Mt 22 : 34–46  LUT . The text by an unknown poet is based on the chorale in five stanzas Herr Christ, the unified God son by Elisabeth Cruciger (1524). The wording of the first and last stanzas was retained for sentences 1 and 6 of the cantata, stanzas 2 and 3 were repositioned to the corresponding sentences, and stanza 4 became two cantata movements.

Occupation and structure

The cantata is set for four soloists, soprano , alto , tenor and bass , four-part choir, flauto piccolo (a sopranino recorder that Bach later replaced with violino piccolo ), flauto traverso , two oboes , horn (later trombone ), two violins , viola and basso continuo .

  1. Coro: Mr. Christ, the turned son of God
  2. Recitativo (alto): O miraculous power of love
  3. Aria (tenor, flute): Oh, draw the soul with ropes of love
  4. Recitativo (soprano): Oh, lead me, O God, to the right path
  5. Aria (bass, oboes, strings): now to the right, now to the left
  6. Chorale: kill us through your goodness

music

In the opening choir, Bach lets the alto cantus firmus sing, reinforced by a horn (a trombone in later performances). An unusual flauto piccolo (a sopranino recorder in f 2 ) is used to represent the light of the morning star. In a later performance, probably in 1734, a violino piccolo was used instead . The other voices are polyphonic and built into the orchestral composition, some of which they adopt.

The tenor aria is accompanied by the transverse flute, probably played by the flauto piccolo player in the first movement. As for the cantata What I ask about the world , composed a few weeks earlier, an excellent flautist seemed to be available.

The bass aria illustrates the words Soon to the right, now to the left, my stray step was guided through their figuration and the alternation between winds and strings. In the middle section there are even steps for Go, my Savior, with . The last section connects both elements.

The final chorale is four-part for the choir, horn, oboes and strings.
