List of Bach cantatas

Auf, crashing tones of the cheerful trumpets ( BWV 207a) is a secular cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach .

Emergence

The cantata was written on the occasion of the name day of Elector Friedrich August III. It was performed on August 3, probably of 1735 or a similar year. The lyricist is unknown.

construction

The soloists probably represent allegorical or mythological figures. Since the text print has not been preserved, one can only guess which soloist embodies what. Alfred Dürr suspects that the soprano represents peace, the bass represents war, and the tenor represents wisdom or the city of Leipzig.

The cantata is largely based on the cantata United Discord of the Changing Strings ( BWV 207); the recitative movements 2, 4 and 6 are new compositions. The march probably came about when the cantata was being performed.

As in the draft United Discord of the Changing Strings ( BWV 207), the opening chorus of the cantata is based on the third movement of the First Brandenburg Concerto (BWV 1046), with the natural horns of the concert being replaced by trumpets.

  1. Up, thunderous tones of the cheerful trumpets (choir)
  2. The silent Pleiße plays (recitative tenor)
  3. Augustus' name day shimmer (aria tenor)
  4. Augustus' Wohl is the loyal Sachsen Wohlergehn (recitative soprano, bass)
  5. The sweet calm can refresh me (soprano, bass)
  6. Augustus protects the happy fields (recitative alto)
  7. Praise, late following periods (Aria Alto)
  8. You happy ones, come here! (Soprano, alto, tenor, bass)
  9. August live, live, King!
