List of Bach cantatas

Non sa che sia dolore ( BWV 209) is a secular cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach , which he performed in Leipzig in 1747 for Lorenz Albrecht Beck's (1723–1768) farewell .

Story and text

Bach composed this cantata for the farewell to Lorenz Albrecht Beck (1723–1768). The librettist is not known.

Occupation and structure

The work is written for a solo part ( soprano ) and is set up with a transverse flute , two violins , a viola and the figured bass .

The cantata has five movements:

  1. symphony
  2. Recitative : Non sa che sia dolore
  3. Aria : Parti pur e con dolore
  4. Recitative: Tuo saver al tempo e l'età contrasta
  5. Aria: Ricetti gramezza e pavento

music

Bach may have derived the opening symphony in B minor from an older concerto. It contains a baroque "weeping figure ". The first recitative uses tonality to underline the meaning of the "quasi-philosophical" text. The following da capo aria is in E minor and contains an obbligato flute part . The second recitative is a short secco recitative and stands in sharp contrast to the final “exuberant” da capo aria.
