List of Bach cantatas

Let's take care, let's watch ( BWV 213) is a secular cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . Bach composed it in Leipzig and directed the first performance on September 5, 1733. The work is also known as Die Wahl des Herkules or Hercules am Scheidewege .

Emergence

The work is a dramma per musica on the Greek mythical theme Hercules at the Crossroads . Bach composed the cantata based on a text by Picander on the occasion of the eleventh birthday of Prince Elector Friedrich Christian . The world premiere took place in Leipzig in the Zimmermannsche Kaffeehaus , which is discussed in the coffee cantata .

Parts of the work, including the opening chorus and the aria Sleep, My Dearest, and care for the peace , have been taken over by Bach slightly changed in Part IV and II of his Christmas Oratorio . The counsel of the gods in the opening choir Let us take care, let us watch over our son of gods becomes a Christian prayer text in the Christmas Oratorio: Fall with thanks, fall with praise before the highest mercy seat.
